Wireless 2.4GHz

The wireless requirements of such a system include;
  • Reliable bi-directional data transfer. Data transfer must be error corrected in order to cope with adverse operating conditions.
  • Fully addressable nodes. Data transfers to specific destination nodes.
  • Low power requirements. Nodes must be suitably low power to enable battery operation. Low power consumption is dependant on very fast, start-up - data send - sleep cycles.
  • High data rates over long ranges. Data rates up to 115.2Kb over 200m.
  • Modular design with small footprint. Solution must be easy to intigrate into customers’ application designs.
  • Easy link configuration. Nodes must be capable of selectively pairing with other nodes (without channel limitation) instantly, either automatically or at the request of the end user.
  • Flexible operation. One or more data collection nodes must be able to link to a single data recording node, simultaneously.

These requirements rule out simple RF based modules, as these operate in pairs and tend not to be bi-directional or error corrected. Equally Zigbee stack based solutions are inflexible, slow, and with the exception of end-point nodes, are not suited to battery operation. However the hardware upon which Zigbee technology operates offers link data rates of 240Kb/s and upwards, very low link budgets, and small footprint devices.
